Federal Government Typing Test

The federal typing test is a standardized assessment used by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to evaluate the typing proficiency of applicants for clerical and administrative positions in the United States federal government. It is a mandatory requirement for positions classified under the GS-300 series (Clerical and Administrative Support) and the GS-0318 series (Office Automation Clerk).

Unlike general typing tests, the federal typing test follows strict OPM guidelines. The test lasts exactly 5 minutes. Applicants must achieve a minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute (WPM) with no more than 3 errors. Exceeding the error limit results in immediate disqualification, regardless of typing speed. There is no opportunity to correct mistakes during the test.

The test is typically administered on a government-issued computer at a designated testing facility. • No Corrections: Backspace and delete keys are disabled during the test. You cannot go back and fix mistakes.
• No Paste: Clipboard paste is disabled to prevent automated text entry.
• Passing: You must meet both the 40 WPM speed requirement AND have 3 or fewer errors to pass. Failing either condition results in disqualification.

Passing the OPM typing test on the first attempt requires preparation and practice. Here are proven strategies to help you succeed:

• Do not stop for errors: Since you cannot use backspace, an error is permanent. If you make a mistake, continue typing the correct characters from that point forward rather than pausing to think about the error.
• Read ahead: Glance at the next few words while typing the current word. This keeps your fingers moving smoothly and reduces hesitation.
• Build endurance: Five minutes of continuous typing is longer than most practice tests. Practice full 5-minute sessions to build the stamina you will need.
