How to Build Typing Speed
Typing speed is not something you develop by typing as fast as possible. It comes from typing accurately and consistently over time. When you stop making mistakes, your brain feels confident enough to speed up.
The most effective way to increase your WPM is to practice common English words and phrases. About 100 words make up roughly 50% of everything written in English. Mastering these words lets you type much faster without thinking about individual keystrokes.
Another key factor is rhythm. Professional typists type in a steady rhythm, not in bursts. Aim for a consistent pace rather than short bursts of speed followed by slowdowns.
Speed-Building Techniques
- Practice with common words. Type through lists of the 100, 500, and 1000 most common English words.
- Use a metronome. Set it to 60 BPM and try to type one character per beat. Then increase to 90, 120, and beyond.
- Type actual text, not random letters. Your brain learns patterns in real sentences. Random letter strings do not build real typing skill.
- Slow down to speed up. If you are making more than 5 mistakes per minute, slow down. Accuracy always wins.
- Track your WPM weekly. Measure your speed every week and aim for slow, steady improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast can I realistically type?
With daily practice, most people can reach 60 to 80 WPM within a few months. Reaching 100+ WPM takes a year or more of consistent practice.
Is speed more important than accuracy?
No. Accuracy comes first, always. It is better to type at 50 WPM with 98% accuracy than 80 WPM with 90% accuracy, because the second typist spends more time fixing mistakes.
Should I practice speed every day?
Short daily sessions beat long weekly sessions. Ten minutes a day will improve your typing far more than one hour once a week.
